ArtBARK! Contest Entry

Last week I worked on an entry for the ArtBARK! Contest and raffle which is sponsored by Bone Adventure and Stray Dog Arts. I decided to draw Eddie, a Catahoula Leopard dog that we fostered a few years back!

This is the finished drawing;

It was quite a challenge to draw all the fur and took about two and a half days to finish! I used Blick studio graphite pencils, Copic markers and a white gel pen for this piece. :)

Here's a work in progress shot;

Tonight I'm going to a gallery opening to see it hung along with all of the other entries and the work of Jessie Marianiello of Stray Dog Arts! I'm really excited to see all of the entries, there will be a lot of good artwork there!

In Memory of Gary Rosemary

    Today I am sharing some sad news with you, Gary Rosemary my Helix Aspersa snail has passed away... Gary was such an amazing and interesting pet and it was a really neat experience learning so much about snails over the past 2 years, I'd like to share with you a little bit about Gary:

Gary arrived in late September 2011, all the way from California (accidentally) in a rosemary container! (that's why his last name is Rosemary)
 He was around a few weeks old and no bigger then my thumb-nail when he arrived.
 I set up a home for him in a small jar until he started growing bigger, then his home was transferred to a larger jar, but Gary was still growing and a few weeks later Gary had outgrown his 2nd home and he was moved to a 10 gallon tank, with a log to hide in, plants and a shallow pool for him!
I was constantly learning more and more about snails, did you know snails use their radula (tongue) to scrape of the food they eat? Or that they have around 14,175 teeth?
 Every night I could hear Gary eating from the opposite side of my room, I don't recommend keeping snails in your bedroom they're surprisingly very loud!
I took him out once in a while on my hand, snails bodies feel very cool and slimy, a few times Gary would try to nibble on my fingers! Snails teeth feel like sandpaper.
I kept a scientific journal for Gary were I wrote down lots of interesting discoveries about snails and updates on Gary"s life.

I drew this in memory of Gary, markers, colored pencils and micron pens on Strathmore Bristol paper.

Practicing with markers

Today I've been practicing my blending and shading with markers! I haven't used markers a whole lot but I've been really liking using them lately! I love the way they glide across the paper so smoothly...

Working on the skin.

Now the hair.

Finished!

Latest Sketches

These are a few character sketches I've drawn recently!

I'm going to try and do some finished pieces with a few of these characters, maybe something with watercolor as I haven't used my watercolors in a while! :)
